XPEL - Protecting Customers of All Levels
“I’m the CEO now but it’s not my company. I’m the steward of it”
XPEL, a paint protection film company returned 88x over 10 years. It made many shareholders into millionaires in 2020. Among the die-hard shareholders who went all-in on XPEL was Sean Iddings, the co-author of Intelligent Fanatics. That’s what piqued my interest. XPEL wasn’t a random company making a poor product. It could be one with an intelligent fanatic CEO in Ryan Pape.
XPEL sells paint protection film (PPF) and window film for cars. They also sell architectural window films. Not the kind of products venture capitalists would consider exciting. But a crucial product. XPEL’s Eric Keller, Business Development Manager, said they were a business selling aspirins, not vitamins. They take the pain away.
What is a film? PPFs are a thin layer of transparent film that coats the car to protect the paint from chipping and scratching when debris hits it. The window films are similar in function. But PPFs is XPEL’s bread and butter, it’s what became known for.
